The best word to describe Ryuichi Ashizawa¡¯s architecture is ¡°flow¡±. A flow that brings humans closer to their surrounding environment. This is the story of his fight. I use the word flow because his architecture does not conceive of physical construction as the sole design principle - a challenging attempt, considering that architecture usually emphasizes the materiality of buildings, focusing on construction methods and structural solutions. Every built structure is subject to gravity, and structural design is a powerful way for humans to conquer this natural phenomenon. As a consequence, convinced that structure is the essence that shapes buildings, there¡¯s a constant need to understand the appropriate placement of columns, the span of beams, and their correct construction method.
