Even though graduating from the Fisheries College would have qualified me as a Second Officer, I decided to skip that and sign on as a trainee. I believed that in fishing, ‘practice’ far outweighs ‘theory,’ and ‘experience’ surpasses ‘academic degrees.’ Plus, I knew I had to grab the opportunity while I could. Opportunities are like elusive fish - they only poke their heads out for a second before disappearing.
Perhaps that readiness to act is what sets me apart. When I feel like I want or need to do something, I just go for it. That’s why I think the following saying rings so true.

Looking back, it’s fair to say that Korea Investment Holdings’ success is a result of taking chances-they were the first to do things like a fisheries company acquiring a brokerage, introducing a performance-based incentive system to a brokerage, and operating debt-free management.
One more thing I’d emphasize is the importance of truly recognizing and rewarding employee’s performance-instilling pride, a sense of achievement and strong motivation. In 2017, a captain from Dongwon Industries earned 1.27 billion won, nearly three times the CEO’s salary, setting the highest compensation record in the fishing industry. In an interview with the Chosun Ilbo, he said, “If you work hard, even a newcomer can earn 100 million won a year.” The same goes for Korea Investment & Securities: in 2018, an assistant manager in the investment department even out-earned the president and the owner-vice chairman, making headlines as the highest-paid employee with around 2.2billion won. 그리고 여기에 한 가지를 더하자면 직원들의 성과를 제대로 인정하고, 그에 따른 보상을 함으로써 직원들에게 보람과 성취감을 안겨주고 적극적 동기를 부여한 것도 언급하고 싶다. 2017년 동원산업의 한 선장은 CEO인 사장 연봉의 3배에 육박하는 12억 7,000만 원의 연봉을 받아 수산업계 역대 최고액을 기록했다. 당시 그는 〈조선일보〉와의 인터뷰에서 “열심히 하면 신참도 연봉 1억 원을 받는다”고 밝히기도 했다. 한국투자증권 역시 마찬가지다. 2018년 투자 관련 부서 팀장을 맡은 한 차장이 사장은 물론 오너인 부회장마저 제치고, 가장 많은 연봉(22여억 원)을 받아 화제에 오르기도 했다. 열심히 제대로 일하면 직원이 사장보다 더 벌 수 있는 회사, 그것이 동원, 그리고 한국투자증권이라고 자신하는 이유다.

When a massive typhoon hits a ship at sea, most people probably imagine the crew staring at the waves. But in my experience, that’s not true. Sailors don’t look at the waves; they look at the captain’s face.
When a ship enters the eye of a storm, the sky turns a dark gray, and mountainous waves crash around. Just a single glance at those waves can fill a sailor with overwhelming dread. That’s when everyone looks to the captain’s face, not the waves. If they see confidence and composure there, they believe they can pull together, follow the captain’s orders, and make it through the storm.
However, if they catch even a hint of confusion or anxiety on the captain’s face, their fear spirals out of control, often leading to disaster. This highlights the immense responsibility leaders carry for their team. People look to their leaders for reassurance about their future. They only trust and follow leaders who can remain calm and confident, even in the direst situations.

(바다에서 배를 타고 가다 강력한 태풍이 불면 사람들은 대부분 선원들이 파도를 볼 거라고 생각한다. 하지만 내 경험상 그 말은 틀렸다. 선원들은 파도를 보지 않고 선장의 얼굴을 본다.
선박이 폭풍권에 진입하면 하늘은 짙은 회색으로 변하며, 산더미 같은 파도가 몰려온다. 선원들은 파도를 한번 바라보는 것만으로도 감당하기 어려운 공포를 느낀다. 이때 선원들은 파도를 보지 않고 모두 선장의 얼굴을 바라본다. 선장의 표정에서 자신감과 담담함이 보이면 선장의 지시에 따라 단결하여 폭풍권을 벗어날 수 있다고 생각한다.
그러나 만에 하나 선장의 얼굴에 당혹감과 불안함이 보이면 선원들의 불안은 더욱 커져 수습할 수 없는 지경에 빠지는 경우가 많다. 이처럼 리더는 부하직원 모두를 책임져야 하는 막중한 위치에 있다. 부하들은 리더의 모습에서 자신의 미래를 찾게 된다. 그들은 최악의 상황에서도 태연할 수 있는 담력과 자신감을 지닌 리더만을 믿고 따른다.
